A bettor earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro just before it was publicly declared, raising questions about whether someone profited from non-public details of the US operation.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the end of January increased in the time leading up to former President Trump announced on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

One account, which became a member last month and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Trading information shows that users put the odds of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

But the market's assessment had climbed to over 10% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the early hours of Saturday, suggesting a sharp shift in market sentiment just before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a trade based on non-public details," said a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other individuals also profited tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Grows

Politicians are starting to take note.

A new rule put forward on recently would prevent government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the past few years, with users able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to politics.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
